I painted this from a photo I took along Highway 68 in Monterey County during my daily commute years ago. There was this one spring when the hills were covered in lupine, and I’d never seen anything like it before—or since. It stopped me in my tracks enough that I pulled over and took the picture. When I painted it, I wasn’t trying to make every detail exact. I just wanted to capture the feel of those rolling Monterey County hills and that sweep of purple cutting through the landscape. The greens and golds were already beautiful on their own, but the lupine gave the whole scene this unexpected pop of color. It’s one of those moments you don’t plan for—you just happen to be there on the right day, and it sticks with you.
